The aspect of ferrets living together is a great point! While some shelters
keep their ferrets in the pairs they are familiar with, I have made a large
open cage out of several Ferret Nation cages, though it is still possible to
close the bottom sections either for isolation during cleaning, for ferrets
that are unable to get along with the pack, or for ferrets who are weak or
otherwise unable to keep up with everyone else.
While there is the occasional grumbling, hissing and squealing while the
"owner" of a particular hammock or sleep sack is established, by and large I
think my ferrets are very well adjusted. More than one has gone into a new
home that already had one or more ferrets and integrated seamlessly into
their household. I also find that with the "pack" organization, the loss of
one ferret doesn't seem to be as much of a stress upon the other animals. I
have had several ferret pairs come in with one adrenal animal and the other
very healthy - when the adrenal animal passed on, the healthy animal barely
seemed to notice as it had other ferrets to bunk with still and was not
missing its only cage mate.
