The trick, of course, is to not have more than a person or
family* can afford (including medical care -- which in our
area averages $5,000 over the ferrets' lifetimes), not have
more than you can keep in clean and healthy circumstances
normally, not have more than you can carefully watch so
that early signs of possible medical problems are not missed
(resulting in better outcome from prompt care).
We have had over a quarter century with ferrets and know a
good bit about spotting medical problems early, yet Steve
and I have never had more than 7 of our own at one time
and currently have 5.
The people who tend to have a lot are:
1. shelters
2. relative newbies who are due to learn the hard way that they
have gotten themselves into trouble when the ferrets get older,
so they will go into debt or deplete their savings, or the ferrets
will suffer, or both (THE USUAL CASE)
3. people with a lot of money and sometimes a lot of people to
share the observing and work
4. hoarders who don't provide vet care but have a lot of animals
often thinking that they are the only people who can provide the
love the animals need due to the confusion of their condition:

discounts, some volunteers. (They always need more.)
