Your citation was in reference to a clinical trial on a small sample
that was based on treatment in humans to eradicate H. pylori (Martini,
Fox, Taylor et., 1997). Interesting, but not generalizable because of
the small sample i.e., 6 ferrets.
In contrast Fox (1998) also recommended a triple therapy consisting of
amoxicillin, metronidazole and Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate)
earlier in the same paragraph cited by you (p. 335).
So what is a lay person to make of this contradictory information? I
believe you would concur - it is best to leave the prescribing to the
experts, that is, the ferret veterinarians treating particular ferrets -
especially since regional and international clinical practices do vary
considerably.
While Fox is clearly a seminal work - this text is 10 years old.
I am confident we would all agree that a 7 year-old ferret, who has been
grinding her teeth for several weeks and is suspected of having an ulcer
needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible!
