In 2004 my Bandit had an exploratory done to see if he had insulinoma
and adrenal ... he had some insulinomas removed, his left adrenal
removed and was diagnosed with IBD thru a biopsy .. He was on Pred
for his IBD and about 6 months later he started acting like he had
insulinoma again ... lethargic, not eating, staggering, etc ... I
took him in to the vets and his glucose was 630!!!! ... my vet nearly
dropped over. Bandit stablized on insulin which I had to give him 2x
day .. I had to take his bloodsugar before giving him insulin and
adjust his insulin accordingly. About 3 months later to my shock he
had a low reading of around 40 so now he was insulinomic again...but
with an increase in his Pred he was doing quite well .. We do not
know if maybe the IBD had something to do with it or not...he lived
another year before passing away from Lymphoma which is a thought
that this will come about with IBD ... Diabetes is not very common in
ferrets but it is out there. My vet has seen his share of it so he
isn't really shocked except when he had that nearly fatal reading of
630... .. I just wish more vets will become more knowledgeable about
it and help ferret owners sooner to help save the ferrets .. dosing
insulin is very difficult in ferrets and we just got very lucky I
guess ...Bandit was on Humulin U and I have no idea why it came about
6 months later. Hope your fuzzy is doing well and this will only be
temporary..
Jackie
