Subject: [ferrethealth] one leg lameness in rear, no break on xray..what's wrong?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have a 2 year old who suddenly couldn't make full use of his one
left leg suddenly. He now mostly drags his rear to move. There is
obvious pain response when trying to
get the ferret to put the leg into the walking
position. 3 rounds of X-rays showed no obvious break
but now she thinks this may be a ligament or joint
issue. When the ferret is held, he keeps the leg
outstretched and at the ankle, keeps it points out and
down (if I'm able to describe the position with enough
detail) Trying to get him manually to tuck it into a
position he could walk, he starts huffing. He's
dragging his hind mostly b/c it's the easiest way to
walk. Supporting his weight, he'll use one leg fine
and the other instead of doing the walking motion
under his body, he kind of brings the leg around in a
half circular motion. Been to 3 vets, started with a diagnosis of a
broken calcaneus to a spinal injury and now back to a single leg
issue. He's been on steroidal shots and now prednelisone orally for
48 hours. soft tissue, achilles tendon, ligament???
Have you any knowledge or experience with possible
injuries like these in ferrets? Any idea of
treatments? The next step is a $1500 MRI for us.
Thank for all your help.
