Hello,

I have only been owned by ferts for 3 short years, but I have a 3.5 year old male who is hyperadrenalomic (SPELLING?). He didn't have fur loss but his coat changed textures a few months back. I took him to the vet who said that he is probably in the early stages of adrenal disease so he gave him melatonin shot. Since then he has been very tired. This ferret has always been on the big side (despite my biggest efforts) and he is utterly lazy but when he got even more tired I went to the vet TWICE convinced he had insulinoma. The vet said that it is definitely not insulinoma, but that melatonin does tend to mellow them out and also the effects of enlarged adrenals could be making him sleepy. His belly has become more distended even though the scale shows he lost some weight. His fur is not soft and luxurious again thanks to the Melatonin implant, and of course I look for signs of fur loss every day. He still loves life and chases toys for small spurts, and
he still humors me to do "sit-ups" for small smudges of treats on my fingers. He is just much more tired.

Another thing I watch for every day is how he pees. Male ferts with adrenal disease tend to have enlarged prostrates which could block his urethra and that is life-threatening. If he tries to pee A LOT without anything coming out take him to the ER ASAP! What I did is I trained him to pee on the tile floor so I can see his pee! (that undoes a lot of potty training we did, but it is for a good cause :))

I wish you luck with your fuzzy!

Sonia
