Subject: [ferrethealth] Hypocalcemia - was Almost a tragedy
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Tonight things are settling in. Val seems to be fine, although we are
getting her calcium level checked tomorrow. I am hand feeding the babies 6
times a day (every 4 hours), and separating Val from them for periods of
time between feedings. At first it was hard to do the tube feeding, but now
I am getting the hang of it. However, the whole process takes about an
hour, so I get a 3 hour break in between the feedings. Makes for very
disrupted sleep at night.
Ferrets need a correct ration of calcium to phosphorus - or so I have been
told. So, I am in the process of finding a calcium supplement that has the
right ratio. In the meantime, I am giving her small pieces of a human
calcium supplement that does contain some phosphorus.
I want to thank everyone who wrote to me about this. I really appreciated
everyone's kind thoughts. I will update the list periodically on the
progress of Val and her litter. In the meantime, the online album is still
available for anyone who is interested in seeing pictures. Unfortunately,
with everything going on, I have not updated it for several days. Here is
