To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My ferret went to an orthopedic vet after referral from my vet for a
possible fractured calcaneus. The orthopedic vet took hi-res x-rays
and came to the conclusion it wasn't the problem and sent me back to
my general care vet but she still thinks the problem lies in the heel
so I'm completely confused as to who to trust. I can send scans of
the x-rays if you could off your advice. I'm really scared and would
do whatever it takes for a full diagnosis.
Without an MRI, how can we tell if it is a ACL or muscle or ligament
or something else based on the bone location from the x-rays and
physical exams? He is not bending it properly w/o pain or moving it
w/o moving it around his body(rather than bending he walks the leg
with a circular motion on the leg perpendicular to his body and only
one leg) when supporting his weight. He has been on Dexamethozone
shots since friday pm for the first shot then weaned slowly off over 3
more shots then now on oral prednisolone. Is this ok in your opinion
for care or possible treatment? This came from thinking the problem
was spinal as he was dragging his rear but the thinking now is that
the rear is mostly dragged b/c he cannot support his weight on 3 legs
so dragging the rear is easier than limping on one bad leg.
Thank you for your help.
