her symptoms included being lethargic, hind leg weakness,to dragging her rear legs she wouldn't leave her cage, couldn't climb, loss of appetite, distended abdomen, sneezing coughing runny nose.

i've owned ferrets for 8 years, and she displayed signs of juvenile lymphoma, two of mine passed due to it. so i was jumping to that conclusion when i brought her in. luckily as opposed to when my other kids got sick the vet i went to deals primarily with ferrets which helped determine things a lot faster.

she went in did bloodwork had her abdomen drained ran a test on the fluid also had xrays, all of which were inconclusive. she had an ultrasound, the vet came out told me one of her kidney's wasn't functioning and they would sched surgery the next morning. she had her kidney removed. marshall farms surgically stapled the kidney shut when they neutered her. it took her about a month to recover from the removal of her kidney. but i know for a fact if theres hindleg issues that are inconclusive theres probably a more underlying problem regarding it. thats why i thought immediatly juvenile lymphoma its what happened to my other two turns out with her i was wrong thankfully.
and my vet never mentioned an mri, basically i went in they did bloodwork drained her abdomen ran a check on the fluid they removed, waited for the results which were inconclusive, sched an ultrasound next day figured out the problem did surgery the next day to remove the kidney which was a dried up sac. they determined in less than a week what was wrong and corrected it.
the odds of what happened with her in comparison to you are slim by any means but i would go for exploratory vs mri

Did you have an MRI done before surgery to confirm the problem or
right to exploratory?
