Subject: RE: Insulinoma in young ferrets Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1039
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

When my baby was low in sugar, she went completely limp and with a little sugar, started coming back and walking again, but she walked like she was drunk.

They say that sometimes a ferrets sugar level can drop enough that they go into that same stage of limpness, but can recover on their own at times when things inside kick back into gear.

I am not certain if you were with him over the little while prior to you seeing him walk funny, but there is a chance he may have had a low sugar episode and recovered on his own, which is when you may have seen him. The recovery is gradual and as mentioned above, they tend to walk around looking drunk more then anything. Once she ate more food, she went right back to her normal self. My little one had been sleeping a lot also, and it was because she had slept so long without eating that caused her to go into this state.

But the strange part was that she actually did not have insulinoma. They originally put her on Predisone, but then our new vet asked us to ween her off, as one episode does not equal automatic insulinoma. She has been off the medication now for 6 months and we have not had a repeat episode at all. She has also had her blood tested twice to be sure and both times, results were normal.

I am not sure about ferrets, but I know I tend to want more sleep this time of year and I have noticed a couple of my babies sleeping more also. I just make sure to get them up and make sure they eat at least twice a day and the rest I leave up to them. I also monitor and watch my little girl regularly just in case, but we have not seen a repeat at all.

I hope I have helped a little.

IRENE
