Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Evo??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

i did not experience any loose stools while transitioning to evo
feline (tried the ferret one once - same thing only more expensive).

i do have to say that i did it very, very slowly. i started with only
10% of the kibble being the evo and kept it at that level for a couple
of weeks. then i increased it to 15% for another two weeks. then to
20%.

at the time i had two groups - the kits and the seniors. the kits were
under warranty so their mix was mostly the path valley baby/senior
with about 20% of totally ferret that i'd previously integrated. when
i started adding in the evo, i left the tf at it's percentage and
decreased just the pv stuff. the seniors were eating the tf at 75%
and the pv baby/senior at 25%.

once i got to 20% evo in the mix, i kept the kits mix at 20% evo, 20%
totally ferret and 60% path valley baby/senior until the younger of
the two turned 11 months old and then i increased the evo to 30%, the
tf to 30% and the pv went down to 40%. again, for two weeks. then i
went 40% evo, 30% tf and 30% pv for two weeks. then i increased the
evo to 50%, decreasing the the pv to 20% and leaving the tf at 30%.
then 60% evo, 10% pv and 30% tf

the seniors mix was changed to add in the evo at 10% evo, 20% pv and
70% tf for two weeks. then 20% evo, 20% pv and 60% tf for two weeks.
the next change was to increase the evo to 30%, lowered the pv to 15%
and the tf to 55% for two weeks. then 40% evo, 15% pv and 45% tf for
two weeks. then 50% evo, 15% pv and 35% tf. then 60% evo, 10% pv and
30% tf.

once everyone was eating the same mix at the same percentages i was
able to keep them in one cage. i continued to do changes every two
weeks - increasing the amount of evo by 10% and decreasing the other
two by 5% each until the pv was gone. i kept them with a mix of 80%
evo and 20% tf. then i'd do something else instead of the tf - just
to keep them familiar with other foods in case i wasn't able to get
the evo. then the store where i usually get it started keeping it
stock better so i decided to just stop adding in the other. i moved
them off the stuff with grains in it in 10% increments.

last spring i started mixing in the evo canine red bites - started
with 10% and worked up to 30%.

i never saw any loose stools, ever. the only thing i did notice was
the one kit (the boy) was more than a bit gassy. that was only during
the first month, though, and he's not had any repeat of the gassy
stuff since.

i've heard a few people say they've seen loose stools when switching
to the evo. maybe it's just something that needs to be done extra
slowly (like i did it)??

i'm not so sure about that now though. i took in some of the dmk kids
and they ended up going right on the evo with no switch-out time at
all - after having numerous food changes for the two months before
they came here. no loose stools and no gas issues from any of them.
