Subject: [ferrethealth] Asking a Vet questions on phone (was Re Pred questions)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I worked as a Veterinary Assistant at an animal hospital for almost 7
years, and I have a suggestion. When calling your clinic, rather than
asking to speak directly to the Vet, ask to speak with one of the
Veterinary Technicians. By looking in your animal's record, the
Technician may be able to answer your question herself, and if not,
she will know what information the Vet needs in order to answer your
question.
It is probably different in every clinic, but in my experience (both
at my hospital and from calling others), the receptionists, while
they may be wonderful people, simply do not have the training or
experience to be able to answer your questions. The Veterinarians,
while also wonderful people whom I respect GREATLY, may be simply
overwhelmed with patients, and unable to get to the phone.
The Technicians are a well-educated, compassionate group of people.
They are trained to act as a go-between with you and your Vet. They
know what questions to ask you, and they know what information to
give the Vet in order to get the correct response. Not only that,
they have the Vet's ear, because the Vet trusts them. They can also
explain the Vet's answer in layman's terms, if necessary, while a
Receptionist will only be able to relay the information verbatim.
In short, please remember the Vet Techs are your friends and allies --
USE THEM.
Bright Blessings,
Becky
