Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Help with decision
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,
I went through a long illness ith my insulinomic ferret before
setting him free. My boy would not eat on his own for 2.5 years.
When my boy first got sick, life was still pretty good for him. But
things got rougher every time. I know how hard it is when they still
come to you for cuddle and kisses. I know how bad it gets when you
cryy yourself to sleep every night. My boy wwent on a slow downhill
slde the last 2monhs befre I put him down. For the last 2 months of
hs life, he had little energy, and it became apparrent that the
quality of his life was not going to improve - this was not a
teporary slump. The morning I took him in, he actually ran around the
room and ended up throwing himself into my lap for kisses. I took
him in, and he wasn't doing really poorly at the time. Then, he went
flat on the table and his eyes had that dull look. II never did know
if it was the right time, but I knew that my boy wasn't having any
more arefree happy ferret days. So, I went ahead with the shot. The
necropsy showed lymphoma in the bone . We had done aspirates from
nodes, liver, spleen, etc.but it never showed up

Anyway, if I had it to do ver again, I would have given the shot two
months earlier. But I had to give my boy a chance to see if he was
in a slump. OnceI got over the initial shot, everything was better
fo me, my feret angel, and the brother he left behnd. It was OK.

Each case is very different. In my case, I felt that he was
starting to have more "flat ferret time" than happy ferret time. I
knew his good moments weren't all that great, and I looked at my
ferret , he was not happy most of the time. And he was only going to
get worse. I think I did the right thing for everyone.

Your decision also depend on how much you can deal with. The quality
of life situation also applies to you as well. If you know your
ferret is not going to get better, and the quality of life is notvery
good, it's very hard on both the ferret and the owner.

I hope this helps. Whatever your decision may be, you have alo of
support from this group. Many of us have "been there".
