Subject: [ferrethealth] Measuring Distemper Titers
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi!

I'm returning to this list as a member after a couple of years of
inactivity and I'm doing it with a question for all the veterinarians
here. I'm sure I'll get some answers, because this list always gave me
the answers I needed.

I'm a vet student from Chile, just finished vet school and working on
my thesis to obtain my grade as a veterinarian. I'm interested in
measuring post-vaccinal antibodies for Distemper in ferrets. This is
my situation: In my country, there's no approved ferret vaccine for
distemper, so we use dog vaccines. Besides the fact that they are
multivalent, some of them generates sometimes severe adverse
reactions. The idea is to compare two brands (one with no adverse
reactions described and the other one with many adverse reactions) to
see if the immunity generated is the same (one is MLV and the other
one is recombinant). Here is the issue: I would like to know if the
test used for dogs can be used in ferrets... For instance, the
ImmunoComb test is for dogs, and they say they haven't test it on
ferrets. How can I decide which test to use? I need to quantify or
semiquantify the antibodies with a method that is not so complicated
(like ELISA) because I will probably do it myself and not so
expensive, because the money will come from my pocket... And I think
all we have here is dog tests... I don't know if there are any test
for ferrets.

I need help from you, from your experience. And I've read on AFA's
website that there's a study now in the US that is measuring distemper
titers, so, if anybody knows what is the lab test that is appropriate,
I would really be thankful.

You'd be helping me and the ferrets of my country..

Thank you

Soledad G=F3mez
