Subject: [ferrethealth] What should I expect with heart failure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have an 8 or 9 year old ferret that was diagnosed with Congestive
Heart Failure a few months ago. We are currently giving her
furosemide 10mg/mL, 0.3 mL twice daily; Enecard 1mg/mL, 0.3mL once
daily; and Optomega Formula, 0.1mL once daily. We had to titrate her
up to the current furosemide dose before her wet cough cleared up.

The problem is, I don't know what to expect as this disease
progresses, and therefore I can't tell when to say "enough is enough"
and let her go. If you have experience with heart failure, please
let me know what I might expect to happen in the future.

She has been drinking enormous amounts of water and urinating a lot.
Her stools have been loose as well. About 10 days ago she stopped
eating her hard kibble and we took her to the vet thinking her tooth
was infected (it wasn't). The vet scraped her teeth and now she is
eating solid food again. However, now she has VERY watery diarrhea
with little or no bladder and bowel control. She has also developed
a slightly prolapsed rectum. The vet had us add 1/4 Zantac tablet
daily and this has not improved the diarrhea. Otherwise, she seems
OK.

I will be keeping in touch with our vet, but I'd appreciate some
additional input from others who have gone through this. Thanks.
