The price you were quoted is half what it would cost to neuter a ferret
where I live. Ferrets are expensive there is no way around that fact.
I have spent almost $7000.00 on veterinary bills alone on mine in the
last year and the oldest is only 4 years old. I have 6 ferrets. It
costs me $75.00 just to walk in the door of the veterinary clinic. Any
surgical procedure is at minimum $1000.00 where I live.

However, I was aware of the high cost of owning ferrets before I adopted
them. I was prepared to give them the best possible care available,
which meant I had to seriously consider whether I could afford to keep
them for life.

I purchased pet insurance, which defrays some of the costs but does not
cover endocrine disorders, vaccinations, descenting, teeth
cleaning/scaling, spaying or neutering. I have adjusted my lifestyle
and priorities so that they receive the veterinary care they need and I
do without the extra frills in life. This is not a hardship for me, it
was a conscious well-informed decision I made and I believe it is the
level of committment required to have the privilege of sharing one's
home with ferret companions.

If veterinary costs are an inhibitory factor, a viable and reasonable
alternative is to provide a foster home, as Sukie suggested.
