Subject: [ferrethealth] Partial pancreatectomy - which part?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

I had posted earlier asking whether my 2 year-old gib might have early
Insulinoma, given some of the symptoms he has been displaying the past
few months, notably a recent episode of drooling, non-responsiveness
during a collapsed state and coming around after honey was rubbed into
his gums.

He was in to the vet today and his glucose level was 4.72 (Canadian) -
U.S. equivalent 84.66. His baseline in November was 9.23 (Canadian) -
U.S. 166. Given all his symptoms and his current glucose levels we've
decided to go ahead with the nodulectomy and partial pancreatectomy next
week.

The question that my veterinarian has asked me to post to the FHL, which
he will also post to his professional forum is - what part of the
pancreas is removed in a partial pancreatectomy if there are no visible
nodules? He is presuming its the distal end but wants to confirm that
with colleagues and as asked me to post it here as well.

Another question I have is that there appears to be differing opinions
whether to also put the ferret on medication after surgery? I would
prefer to hold off on medications until he starts showing symptoms again
post-surgically.

There has been a lot of discussion around Diazoxide recently. However,
my vet just came back from a conference in the U.S. where this
medication was recommended for inulinomic ferrets as preferred to
prednisone, which is contrary to some of what I've been reading on the
posts here.

So my question - can he be without either medication after surgery as
long as his glucose levels remain stable? Given his age, I am hoping
the surgery will work for a few years.

I'd appreciate input on this and confirmation of which part of the
pancreas should be removed?
