Subject: [ferrethealth] Surprise undescended testicle case.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

A young lady named Michele 'Sheli' Dougherty wrote me about her 18
month old neutered male ferret, Hooligan Babaloo. Initially she wrote
asking about Melantonin therapy as well as other options regarding
adrenal disease. As we spoke, she expressed that this case had her
feeling a bit ill at ease because it was not classic.
-Ferret was a youngster at 18 months old
-Coat was fine
-Muscle tone was fine
-Energy level was fine
He also did not act like a typical adrenal ferret in that he was a
little aggressive. And very sexually aggressive. She listed all the
graphic details lol. I wondered if one of his bits and pieces could
have been left behind but honestly, I never thought that was the
case. Because I'm sorry, when someone takes out a set of testicles
there are supposed to be TWO, like, that's why it's a "set". I mean,
we can count, can't we? I know it's common for females to have
something left behind. But males? So I wrote a few pals, Troy Lynn,
Julie Fossa, Mary Mewton, Danee Devore and two others. All of which
expressed the gut feeling that a testicle might have been left
behind. A few, like me, had some doubt and so they offered other
ideas as well, I mean how does that exactly happen? Sheli's vet
seemed to think it was adrenal and had already advised to begin oral
melantonin. Surgery was offered for exporitory and mostly for the
purpose of adrenalectomy. She initially turned it down opting for a
less invasive go at things since he obviously was not full blown and
since she recently lost a dog to surgery. It never set right in my
gut however. I was alarmed at the feedback from one of the friends
who wrote who said that in some cases, malignant adrenal not only
doens't have the typical patterned hair loss, but sometimes not hair
loss early on and it can express itself with the bizarre behavior we
were seeing. I worried about the possibility of a hidden undescended
testicle as well. Luckily Sheli's vet did not have outragous pricing
and therefore she was able to afford an exploritory and took the
brave step of doing so.

Ala testica'le' (say it french, it sounds much better)! Yes and you
too can enjoy the stunning magnificent view of an extracated male
testicle that was able to enjoy a bit of extra time on this earth. He
could run, but not hide. So, for your viewing pleasure I've loaded
some photos in the gallery under the album of Testacle. There is a
coin next to it, to give you a better idea of the bold size of this
fellow.

Ferret is recouping wonderfully as I type. Thank you to my friends >
for helping to support this woman to do something risky that needed
to be done.
