Another thing that needs to be taken into account, too, and that is differences in genetics.
Already two possible genetic contributors to endocrinological diseases such as adrenal
disease and insulinoma have been found.
The first is MEN (Multiple Endocrinological Neoplasia) genetics which has been found in
ferrets by a team at UC Davis led by Dr. Michelle Hawkins. They already know it is present
in some U.S. lines so know understanding what that variation means for increased risk and
for increased vulnerability to triggering factors.
The second is a p53 variant found by a team led by Dr. Robert Wagner at U. Pittsburgh.
That also needs to be studied further, but like MEN its behavior is known in other species.
In this case in species studied so far the variant reduces the ability to combat tumors and
defeat early tumors when they involve merely a few cells.
There are other possible genetic contributors, so another thing that has to be taken into
account is that in at least some lines which have been bred for appearance rather than for
long term health, longevity and behavior there may be some increased vulnerabilities which
affect degree of vulnerability and rates of disease onset.
