Subject: [ferrethealth] mucus w/frank blood (stool)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

About a week ago, I found a stool that was mostly clear mucus tinged with a little bit of
frank blood, thus slightly pinkish. I had no idea who it belonged to, but examined and
swabbed every furry butt in the business. Still didn't find anything. I called my vet (who
usually has a very hands-off approach anyway), and he told me to "keep an eye" on them.
There was no repeat of the blood or the mucus for several days, and I relaxed.

The other day I found another such stool, this time still mostly clear liquid, slightly
mucus-y but with quite a bit more frank blood. Still no idea who it belongs to. I have since
replaced all litter with potty pads so I can get a good look at every single stool. No blood.
Buddy did show some mucus-y poops but these have very definite color, deep yellow-
green--close to brown. (Still being told to "keep an eye" on them, especially as I don't
know who is making these odd poops.)

Now, I read that coccidia can cause intermittant bloody stools, but as I understand it, the
coccidia "cycle" takes more than a few days. What else can this be? How else can I figure
out who the culprit is? I plan to keep up the intense monitoring, and I keep using the q-
tips. Simply can't afford to have every single ferret tested for every possibility. What else
can I do?

I didn't strain the last batch of soup because it had cooked for a very long time and I
couldn't find any bone fragments. But could it be just a little scratch from bone? That's
what I had concluded after the first time, but with the recent repeat I'm less likely to
believe this.
