Hi Chris,
Ferrets, as you know, derive from a basic species, ie
polecats, which are somewhat noctural and would not dream of sleeping
in a hammock like the pet ferret has been introduced to.
The ferret kept in the more natural way tends not to get the
two headache diseases of Adrenal Gland Disease and Insulinoma.
Ferrets can be kept safely in house, i do it myself, but
require discipline of owner to have them in a sleeping compartment
and exercise area as described in my book 'Ferret
Husbandry, Medicine and Surgery'. They sleep during the day and become
active in the evening. The use of a cover over
the compartment/exercise area and not keeping room lights on all day helps.
Ferrets sleeping outside need underground 'Boltholes"
from light and weather.
Ferrets in sheds in cages could simple have the cages
blackened out by some cover during the daylight.
Prevention is better than cure.
Regards,
John
