Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: sugar needs.....
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Does this ferret also have uncontrollable insulinoma or hard to control blood glucose for
any reason? Insulinoma is one of the things which appear able to trigger the onset of A/V
Heart Node Block. Since your ferret has Node Block this becomes a very real consideration
if there is also a problem with the blood sugar levels.

Most people are not used to this combination of medical needs.

A ferret who has hard to control insulinoma (or one with hard to control lymphoma in the
pancreas or carcinoma in the pancreas) can benefit from always having some dietary sugar
available. The amounts are not high; the aim is to just prevent a crash. In such a situation
we found that as with lymphoma or carcinoma in the pancreas one thing that worked well
was to use two forks to smoosh (technical word) Nutrical or Nutristat (both of which contain
sugars) into warmed water. Then let it sit till the fat skin develops and remove that skin
because it seems to bug ferrets. The result worked well for these ferrets with very special
needs that standard approaches are not sufficient to meet.

Seizures are hard enough on their own but is the ferret also has one or two serious heart
diseases going on then the seizures are even more dangerous.
