It is not "one size fits all".
Most do fine on 4 hours or so (but ask the vet -- not those at the front desk who will
automatically give the dog and cat timing too often).
There are things which can change the timing in either direction. When pronounced
insulinoma is present a vet may have a short fast or no fast done at home, but then IV the
ferret and have a fast done at the hospital while the ferret is on IV to avoid a crash.
In the other direction, if the ferret has problems emptying the stomach, as one of ours with a
congenital problem did, then that ferret might need as long as 8 or more hours.
