Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Blood Glucose results - accuracy questioned due to food intake
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

When we had blood glucose tests done on Neo we always let him eat normally before going to the vet, as that gave a truer indication of his 'normal' state of being. So, he probably had a window of about 2 hours between his last meal and the tests, yet the tests still always came up very low, so we knew we had a problem. Your ferret's reading of 110 is certainly okay and not indicative of insulinoma, even if you decrease that reading a little due to the food intake or equipment range.

My understanding is that pepcid on it's own is harmless, and you might want to give it a try, but give it at times that you are not giving the other meds. I had excellent success using Pepcid AC tablets when fighting ulcers with Neo. It kept his stomach calm and his appetite normal. Here is what I did:

Take one 10.0 mg Pepcid AC tablet and dissolve in 4.0 ml of water (I used distilled water). I then administered 0.25 ml of this solution twice daily. That is the equivalent of 1/8 of a tablet daily, or 1.25 mg of the active ingredient Famotidine daily. You have to shake the container briskly each time before drawing the 0.25 ml because there is some settling of the dissolved tablet. We gave him this in conjunction with carafate, and continued this after 4 weeks of amoxicillin. His ulcers were cured in about 10 weeks, and they were pretty bad initially.
