Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Young ferret dying of bronchitis? Help! --Mystery solved--
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I posted awhile back when my Teddy was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia in Oct. I
never got any responses so assumed no one had ever had any experience with it. Teddy
was 1 year old when he was adrenal, had adrenal surgery at 2 1/2 and then at 3 1/3 he got
leukemia. The experienced ferret vet treating Teddy said he had not seen this in a ferret
before. Teddy's WBC was 61,000. Instead of doing the Tufts protocol we decided to try
Leukeran since the vet has used this drug successfully in cats with leukemia. Teddy ended
up with lymphoma in his chest and filled with fluid in less than 2 weeks. We did rescue
therapy, vincristine and elspar (to save his life), 2xs and the tumor shrink by more than
half and the fluid was almost gone in his chest. (He was also on lasix, clavamox,
omeprazole, & pred). We continued to do CBCs and were following the Tufts protocol that
the vet had gotten from Dr Mayer. In Dec we found his lymph nodes enlarged in his
intestines. We did 2 cytoxcin treatments (2 weeks apart) but Teddy died at home after the
last treatment on Dec 27. He was 3 1/2. If anyone needs more info I'd be glad to share
it, it may help another ferret.
