HI Kendra,
Let me try to explain the difference to you.
Petroleum jelly ( unscented and in its original form) is a lubricant
because it coats the intestinal walls and does not penetrate it.
This allows the matters to easily slide through the intestines ie.
hairballs, swallowed fabric etc. and helps alleviate the potential for
tears or separations in the intestinal walls which would cause the ferret
to become septic & die.
Oils like olive oil, corn oil, ferretone ( fish oil) are digested and do
not coat the intestinal walls, they will however soften stool matter but
will not help rid hairballs etc..
In no case should you administer mineral oil to ferrets -- mineral oil
actually plugs up the pores in the intestinal walls andf ferrets can die of
malnutrition due to not being able to absorb nutrients. We saw a case of
this in ou=r days at Ferret Wise
Hope this helps
