Subject: [ferrethealth] Possible IBD with insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello,
one of our furkids, Miss Bits, who's about 7 years old, was
diagnosed with insulinoma a few weeks ago and is currently on .5 mL
of PediaPred twice a day. She's also adrenal and receiving monthly
Lupron injections for that. When the insulinoma diagnoses was made,
we'd also noted teeth grinding and our vet prescribed two weeks of
amoxicillin, clarithomycin, and Carafate for ulcers. She's finished
up her antibiotics last Monday but is still on the Carafate. While
she was still on the antibiotics she began to have loose stools
which have gradually become worsened to pretty bad diarrhea, and her
bottom is red and irritated from her having to poop so frequently.
For the past several weeks she's lost her appetite for kibble (and
lost a subsequent amount of muscle mass and weight in general) and
we've been supplementing her with Gerber Chicken feedings several
times a day. Our vet is now suspecting a food allergy or IBD. I was
a little baffled at the possibility of a food allergy, seeing that
on and off over the years we've had Miss Bits and recently the past
few weeks, we've fed her chicken when she was ill and she's had no
complications with it. Can a ferret develop a food allergy that
suddenly?
After a phone call with the vet (who is an hour and a half's drive
away) we've switched to feeding her Turkey instead of Chicken. Our
vet also recommended to up the dosage of prednisolone to 1.00 mL (or
higher) in the case of IBD and apply some antibiotic ointment or
hydrocortisone cream to the irritated area of her skin several times
a day. I was also extremely worried about the possibility of her
having a prolapsed rectum but her bottom only looks to be red and
sore; nothing protruding.
What are people's experiences of treating both IBD and insulinoma?
Does a higher dosage of the PediaPred change its affects over her
glucose at all? Is there anything more I can do to help Miss Bits
get back on her paws more quickly? I can tell she's feeling pretty
bad right now.
Thank you,
~Emily and the four
