Hi,
Regaring your statement,
...he seems to be chomping on air all the time...
I suspect that your ferret may be grinding his teeth, which is
typically the sign of a tummy ache and/or nausea. Ferrets get
stomach aches an stop eating for a lot of reasons. Examples include
- ulcers/helicbacter bacteria in the stomach
- insulinoma (low blood suga can cause nausea
- intstinal upset ue to bacteria, parasite (like giardia)
- lymphoma
- etc.
Black/dark tarry stools can indicate bleedingin the stomach/ulcer.
Red blood in the stool inidicates intestinal bleeding.
"Spaced-out" staring behavior (inabiliy to focus)/weakness/collapse
can indicate low blood sugar/insulinoma.
You may need to look for a ferret-knowledgeable vet. Even if it means
a long drive, the results from a ferret vet will be worth he time an
money spent getting there. Otherwise, you may end up spending just as
much time and money without getting the help needed.
Best Regards,
-jennifer
