To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Peg,
I'd be very concerned about feeding my ferrets a low protien/ow fat
diet. In particular, it's becoming a generally accepted theory that
foods that are high in carbohyrates are responsible for causing a lot
of the insulinoma (panceatic tumors/cancers) we see in ferrets.
An article in the AFA Report(the AFA 15-year anniversary edition)
recommende 60% protein, 30% fat.
A specific ferret might do better on a low protein diet, but I think
this would be due to inless with eith the kidneys or liver I can't
recall and I'm clearly just a pet owner!
Best Regards,
-jennifer
[Moderator's Note: It is better to design a diet based upon the
individual's actual needs when a serious condition exists than upon
what hypothetically might affect a percentage of ferrets over time.
Following a hypothesis makes sense when it won't cause any risk,
certainly, just in case it pans out when it is well enough studied by
experts in the right fields. Hope that helps!
These are recommended whenever liver disease is suspected:

Hopefully, someone will be familiar with that specific food and
ferret liver disease.]
