Subject: [ferrethealth] Tortellini's biopsy results?? Ideas?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello

I had posted a few weeks ago about my 3 1/2 year-old sprite, Tortellini
who my vet was concerned may have lymphoma.

On February 20th she had an ultrasound and aspirate biopsy of the
abdominal mass. The ultrasound did confirm it was an enlarged lymph
node. She also had a complete blood panel done.

The results do not definitively rule out lymphoma but are suggestive of
another etiology (IBD??). My veterinarian is going to post the results
on his professional forum and has suggested I do same on here to get
some feedback so that we can figure out what is going on with her.

Brief overview she has been having off and on again, intermittent
yellowish, foamy, mucousy stool. Giardia and coccidia and all other
parasites have been ruled out. She recently started grinding her teeth
and has received an injection of Famitodine and was on Metacam for a
couple of days, which helped.

She is fed Innova EVO ferret, currently being supplemented with Hills
A/D mixed with warm water and South Shore Ferret Care Dry Dook Soup Mix
(Ingredients: Ground Innova Evo kibble, Nupro Ferret Supplement, Uncle
Jim's Mix, Vanilla Dry Ensure, Ferret Aide, & Ferret Probiotics).

On physical examination the vet found a palpable mass in her abdomen
approximately 7 cm. in length. This was examined with an ultrasound on
February 20th and the mass was aspirated. 4 unstained slides were sent
to the pathologist for analysis. The results came back today.

Here is the cytology report from the pathologist:

Sample source: Mid-abdominal mesenteric mass

Description: The sample is moderately cellular with a predominance of
small and intermediate well-differentiated lymphocytes, occasional
reactive lymphoblasts and small numbers of mature plasma cells present.

Interpretation: Compatible with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.

Comments: The cause of the hyperplasia is not evident from examination
of this sample.

Hematology results were normal.

Only unusual biochemistry results were (Canadian system):

Glucose: 11.2 mmol/L (normal values 3.0 - 8.5)

Potassium 5.8 mmol/L (normal values 4.0 - 5.5)

Na/K Ratio 25 (normal values 26 - 40)

Suggestions of a differential diagnosis or what other tests should be
done would be greatly appreciated.

I really would prefer not to put her through an exploratory surgery.
She is teeny, size of a kit - extremely hyper and timid. Just going to
the vet causes her extreme stress. She's comfortable with me but not
too many other humans. My Alpha Linguini accompanied her when she went
for her ultrasound, which she had to be sedated for.

Thank you.

Tressie
