Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Lump of fluid on Roofie's neck
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Yes, I currently have a problem like this in a seven year old jill, Black
Sophie. It started with a slightly larger than a pea moveable lump on the side
of her neck. I thought it an abscess probably caused by a bite from one of
my other feisty little old ladies. I immediately started her on amoxi and
made an appointment with the vet for surgical removal. However, before the
appointment, it completely disappeared. I kept her on amoxi for seven days.
About two weeks after discontinuation of the antibiotic, it was back. Back on
antibiotics and hot wet compresses. This time it grew quickly and appeared
to be filled with water. Huh? I thought that it was picking up water from
the compresses. So, I took a sterile needle & syringe and aspirated it. The
fluid I collected was completely clear, and it completely drained. Nothing to
show the vet. Area on neck was completely flat and looked normal. So,
thought that was it......back it came. This time I waited to see what would
happen. And, yes, it again was completely clear. Took her to vet. She
aspirated the lesion and again the fluid was clear. Dx - Cyst. She was scheduled to
have the sac surgically removed. However, the day before her appt., was
Tuesday before last, the great ice storm. Blew my all ready RA racked knee
completely out. Thought I would get the mail before the just started rain froze.
Ha! It was icing on contact. I went one way on the icy brick steps and my
leg went the other. Anyway, Sophie will be going in soon for this procedure.

Hope this similar case information helps. For any swelling, lump, cyst or
abscess there is one very important rule Do Not Squeeze. If the swelling is
an infection, it could cause a systemic infection. My recommendation is to
visit your vet ASAP. Best Wishes, Meg

I have an question about a lump my boy Roofie has. First off, Roofie is
approx 5 yrs old we think. He's always been a slim boy, gets along with
everyone, and just kinda goes with the flow. For the 8 mos or so, he's
gotten this egg shaped lump on his neck where you would scruff him,
though I rarely scruff him. It fills up with fluid, about the size of a
small fingernail. It looks like it has something dark in there too.
