Subject: [ferrethealth] Red, irritated sore behind. Prolapsed rectum or what else?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Phoebe's diarrhea has gotten a bit better; it's still loose but not
nearly as runny or frequent as it was before, and her appetite is
beginning to come back.

However, despite diligent applications of alternating Neosporin and
hydrocortisone, her sore behind hasn't gotten any better. we're very
worried about her. It's causing her a lot of discomfort; she doesn't
like to be held normally because of how sore it is, and she drags it
along the carpet every few steps she takes. Because of that (the
dragging), her lower stomach has actually begun to get sore as well.
I've read about prolapsed rectums in ferrets with diarrhea, and I'm
very worried that might be the case, however, it doesn't look as if
anything is actually "protruding"; though I may be wrong about that.
For the most part her behind is just extremely red and sore. I know
that she should get to the vet ASAP, but unfortunately soonest
possible might not be until Friday morning.

If I bought some Preparation-H for her, would that help? Is that
safe to use on a ferret? Is there anything else that could be
causing her to have this condition? Anything else I can do to help?

Any advice appreciated, as always.
Thanks,
Emily and the four.
