Subject: [ferrethealth] Outdoor playing for health.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

A friend of mine that runs a shelter expressed her concern about the
fact I take my ferrets outside daily to play. She worried about bugs
and pesticides, snakes, ect. I have them on revolution, I have them
on a leash, I never go out until the sun is going down somewhat and
we play in the shade. If skeeters are flying I am inside as I have
allergies. I watch for ants for the same reason. I have pretty
severe asthma and can not be out when it is real hot, so no worry
about them being out when it is too hot. We have not used pesticides
on our back yard (the only place they go) for over 2 years because I
also have 2 bearded dragons that I raise dandelions for and they also
get to go out and play. We have never had a snake in the yard and
they are never left alone anyway. My ferrets dance on their hind legs
when they see the leashes and we run, we dig, we climb and we jump, I
have added them a sand box (kiddy pool) with dirt for digging, and I
am thinking or adding a playhouse. We have fenced a special part (we
have a wooden fence) of the yard off, put in buried runner boards,
new gates with kickboards and made this area 100 % ferret proof. But
anyway they can not get out and I am pretty sure the only getting in
(with 6 foot fences) are birds=85LOL I can think of no reason to deny
the crew the pleasure of playing out doors. They move faster, they
have more muscle mass than when I got them, even their hair is
thicker (of course I did put them on a much better food and added
vits and duck soup). I just can not see how giving then some out
door time is not healthier for them, mentally and physically? Can I
get your opinions please and idea what others do?
