Sukie, I am not arguing with you but having lived in AL for 10 years and
now in VA for 12 years, I have encountered both types of spiders.
Thankfully we had little contact with the brown recluse but a lot with
black widows. While in Al we did have black widows inside and outside of
our home. (It was interesting, we owned a duplex and lived in both side.
The black widows only hung out in and around one side.) Since moving to
VA, we have encountered black widows outside of our home. They make a
distinctive web to go along with their distinctive shape and are easy
for us to spot. Thankfully they don't get into this house and we no
longer have to shake our shoes before putting them on.
We are VERY careful about where we let the ferrets go when we have them
out on leashes due to this. As Sukie said, they do like to be in corners
and overhangs and aren't usually seen during the day.
Jane
(Oh and like in AL, only certain homes in our neighborhood have problems
with them here. It isn't every house that has them.)
