Subject: [ferrethealth] End Stages of Insulinoma
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hey all. Today has been a really bad day for my
ferret, Bear. To recap - he just turned 7, has
insulinoma and is taking .5ml/mg prednisolone twice
per day. For the last week or so he has been having
episodes of pawing at the mouth and drooling every
other day. Fortunately, I have been here to bring him
out of it each time. Today we got up at 7, ate a/d
food and had our medicine. He was fine till about 11
when he came running down the hall frantically pawing
at his mouth. I scooped him up and got him to eat
a/d. He seemed fine so I did not give any sugar at
the time. An hour later Bear was doing the same
thing. I started giving him Karo syrup on his gums
and fed him again. He was ok again till about 12:45
or 1:00 when he again was pawing at his mouth. More
Karo and more a/d and he was ok again. This has
continued throughout the afternoon and into this
evening. I did give him an additional .25ml of pred
around 3. I spoke with my vet by phone about 3:30 and
he told me to give him an additional .5ml of pred at
that time and then again tonight. He wants me to also
give .5ml 3 times tomorrow. He said to continue with
the karo if needed and to call him back if Bear
doesn't improve. Unfortunately, the 24 hour vet
hospital in my area does not treat ferrets, so I am
unable to get a blood glucose reading taken. As of
now, around 6, Bear is sleeping. I've given him
another 4 fingertips of karo over the past hour and a
half. He is doing slightly better than he was
earlier. My question to all of you is - is this the
end stages of insulinoma? Obviously it cannot be good
for Bear to continue with the pawing and the drooling.
I worry too that if this is how things are going
today, then what will tomorrow bring? He has never
had episodes like this where they are back to back to
back.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle
