To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

With insulinoma that is under medical
treatment you have to expect to have
times when doses must be increased
for control.

Remember, too, that surgery can be
helpful.

Okay, 0.5 ml/mg is 2 mg/ml

so 0.25 ml would provide 0.5 mg,
and 0.5 ml will provide one mg
with each dose. Given twice a
day that would be 2 mg per day
or given 3 times a day that would
be 3 mg per day.

How heavy is Bear? Larger ferrets
need higher doses.

The ultimate amount of Prednisolone
depends largely on what the ferret will
personally tolerate. Some are more
inclined to ulcers and can't deal with
much, but others can deal with very
hefty amounts. We had one ferret
who was a tiny female who was on
a total of 5 mg per day at the end.

She also was on compounded Diazoxide.
(These days people are being asked to
see if pet grade Diazoxide is available
in at least some areas because some
places are having trouble getting the
med for the sick children who need it.
I know a couple in HI with that problem
yet here in NJ it has not been a worry.)
Diazoxide does not work for all ferrets
so if trying it it's best to get a small
batch of compounded med.

When insulinoma is really advanced
and the meds have reached the point
where they are pegged you can provide
some handy sugars all the time to give
extra time.

For the moment, though, it seems like
perhaps you have simply reached a point
where the meds need to be increased, and
those times will happen multiple times
during the course of the illness so need to
be expected and watched for.
