Each pet owner has to do they think is best for their pets. You are
ultimately responsible for your pets health. Do what you feel
comfortable with.

That being said, you can NEVER say that your yard hasn't been exposed
to distemper. Unless you live under a dome, many animals have access
to your yard. Make sure your pets are all properly vaccinated. It is
important to note that most vaccinations do not provide prevention
immediately. It normally takes 2-3 weeks for them to be fully
effective. So, don't vaccinate and then take your pets outside the
next day. Give the vaccinations time to work.

Make sure your pets are all on heartworm prevention. In the south,
that needs to be every month, year-round. Mosquitoes carry heartworms
and we have mosquitoes year-round. Even if your ferrets never go
outside, we all know that mosquitoes can get into the house. For those
vets who test for HWs, there are a lot of HW affected ferrets out
there. I would bet that many die from HWs and you never know because
that's not something most vets even consider. I had one little boy who
came in with HWs. Despite agressive treatment (overseen by a vet who
has a great deal of knowledge about HWs in ferrets), I came home to
find him dead one day. He was very young and otherwise very healthy.
So sad.

A little common sense goes a long way. Give your pets the best life
you can, but understand that you alone are responsible for protecting
them.
