Subject: [ferrethealth] Possible Chordoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

A few week ago, the local animal shelter transferred a little boy to
me. He was an owner surrender, with no history provided. He's about
4y.o. Next week, he will be going for his first vet visit. I have
noticed a small bulb on the end of his tail, probably the size of an
English pea. I think it's a chordoma, or it may be some sort of
injury.

With all the many dozens of ferrets who have come through my doors,
I've never dealt with a chordoma before. I looked back in the
Archives (thank you again, Pam) but saw few vet posts about them. I
did read one by Dr. Williams that said they can be painful as they
infiltrate the bone. So, that being said, I think it would be in
Matt's best interest to remove the thing, assuming that's what it is.

I believe the common opinion is to remove them, but they normally
don't metastisize so I guess it's a matter of choice. Though I trust
my vet and his ferret knowledge completely, I like to be able to
discuss these things intelligently with him.

Any and all comments are welcomed.

Katharine
