Actually, Sukie makes a good point here. Any raptor who spots a ferret in
the open might think of dinner and attack. I used to let my ferrets climb in
a window with a strong mesh screen. They so enjoyed the fresh air. And then
one day....Wham. A large hawk hit the screen feet first and talons burying
into the screen. The ferret relaxing in the window at the time leaped higher
than I have ever seen a ferret leap. Had to put his eyeballs back in his
head. Along with the eyeballs of several others who witnessed the attack.
Holes remain in screen to this day. Ferrets no longer use that window. Now
they get fresh air on my porch which is half-walled.
I don't walk my ferrets outside because of all the reasons previously
listed. They do, however, love to ride my shoulder when I walk outside. Funny
because they will constantly reach their heads around to look in my face -
checking I guess to see if I am still there. I keep my eyes peeled for hawks and
owls. Meg

BTW, should there ever be a problem with a large owl (having been

Steve and i used is that I stuffed her down the neck of my jacket
while making the sort of throat moves an owl makes as it swallows.
It's the only thing we have found which works in the situation of
having an owl repeatedly flapping in your face and grabbing at the
ferret and you with talons.
