Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal Gland Disease
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I took my ferret, Slinky, to the vet today, and the vet said he was
pretty sure that Slinky had an adrenal gland tumor on the left
gland. Because he does not specialize in ferrets, he wanted to get
more information and find a vet for me that does. It's rather
heartbreaking to think about. I lost a beloved cat less than 2
years ago to leukemia, and have not fully quit grieving, and I'm
worried about Slinky now. He and I bonded right away, and I dread
the thought of his time with me ending. Slinky is my first ferret,
and I was not aware of the commonality of adrenal issues. Slinky is
5-6 years old now (got him from friends who couldn't keep him
anymore, so not sure on age), and I think he could have some years
left if we deal with the adrenal issue. He has no other outward
symptoms than the tale-tell loss of hair from the tail up onto his
back now.
I would like some info on this disease and the tumors, and an idea
of what to expect. For anyone who has gone through this with their
ferrets, please let me know what I have to look forward to. If
anyone knows of any good ferret-specializing vets in the Kansas
City, MO area, please let me know. If you have taken your ferret
through the surgery before, I'd be interested in hearing your story
about it, as well as your post-op life with your ferret.
Thanks,
Slinky's mom in Independence, MO
