To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Michael and all,
I sympathise with the fate of your ferret Sandman
getting the deadly disease of Cryptococcus. I have had three
personal cases with my ferrets Alby (1996), Tyke
(1997) and Pip (2006). Before the early date I had ferrets
outside/inside since 1973 with no problem. C .
neoforamans can infect dogs, cats horses, and even humans
but was considered a 'rare; disease. It is only rare
when it affects other ferrets than your own! I made
Cryptococcosis a main topic in my book "'Ferret
Husbandy, Medicine and Surgery' Elseiver UK 2007 (also
2000 1st ed) as it is such a nasty disease,
sometimes difficult to diagnosis and definately difficult to treat
and expensive.
Cases occured in Vancouver Canada in 2001, just up
the road a bit from Seattle?
I don't know of the disease occuring in the UK. It
may go straight to a meningitis.
A vaccine for outdoor ferrets would be a blessing
but probably not forthcoming in the near future.
