Removal of the adrenal glands alone may not correct the problem. I've
had 4 to date with prostate issues. 3 went to surgery. 1 died post op.
1 continued to have prostate issues (including 3 complete urinary
bloackages) despite having had both glands removed and the use of
Proscar, the prostate enlargement did finally clear with the addition
of lupron though the ferret only lasted another month (he died of
lymphoma). The 3rd had both glands removed and was on Proscar but
continued to have issues, he did well with the addition of lupron
(prostate issues completely cleared). The 4th is now doing well on
lupron alone (no surgery, no Proscar), prostate issues cleared within
days.
Lupron alone, and not necessarily in megadose (mine do well on 500 mcg
of the 4 month depot), may be enough to correct the problem. It
depends on the cause. If only prostate enlargement, lupron should do
the job. If there are cysts, surgical intervention may be needed to
drain or remove the cysts. Simply removing the adrenal glands is
unlikely to resolve the issue though. Surgery should always be
followed with lupron.
