see things like Adrenal and pancreas problems. Breeding for fancy colours did a lot of
damage to a lot of our bloodlines in the late 80s and early 90s. It seems most US ferrets
now carry defective genes and our ferrets are going the same way. Chris.

I am sorry to read that you find the rates to be increasing in the UK.

Yes, even more recently than 30 years ago we had very few cases of
adrenal disease or insulinoma here in the U.S. (and frankly, a lot of
us fed worse foods then because they were all that was available, but
the ferrets then may not have been as genetically vulnerable so that
can change needs quite thoroughly). That isn't just my impression;
I have heard it from vets who were treating ferrets about 20 years ago
(+/- around 5 years).

My own suspicion is that an imposed genetic change does play a part,
and so do husbandry changes such as less access to complete darkness.

I also suspect that husbandry has no choice but to follow the needs of
the imposed changes to genetics that I suspect occurred.

(Yeah, a LOT is guesswork and much is still hypothetical so not agreed
upon, but past posts deal with some genetic proclivities studied.)
