Karen,
Just my opinion, it may be due to the suppliers doing early spay, neutering and descenting before immune system is fully developed. Could also be attributed to possible defective gene in breeding of either male or females. Defective gene would show up in other offspring used for breeding. Couple that with possibly poor diet lacking in meat protein, and habitat they live in with the inexperienced owner.
Just so many things are dependent on each other. Mainly though, I feel it is the overbreeding by the suppliers.
They are amazing creatures though. Loving and trusting even when faced with so many life threating diseases.
Now if only they would learn to ALWAYS do their business in the provided litter boxes.

I sit here and read everything on here and after about 9 years of
taking care of ferrets and several thousands of dollars later - I
don't think I have ever seen another animal that can have so many
diseases, etc. Sometimes I just don't get it and why it is these
little babies have so many problems. All I can do is just shake my head.
