Subject: [ferrethealth] Anemic 1 year old male, unknown origin - very scared owner!!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a one year old male ferret named Squirt that first presented
with a swollen abdomen. I took him to my vet who first just wanted to
rule out bacterial overgrowth and we put Squirt on Baytril for 1 week.
None of the sympotoms subsided and Squirt became more noticeably
lethargic. He is eating, drinking, deficating and urinating normally.

Next we had our vet refer us to the local veterinary hospital to see a
specialist. After having more than 50cc of ascites drained from his
abodomen, blood work, x-rays, and ultrasounds all we know is that he
has abdominal effusion (ie fluid in his abdomen), functional ileus
(when they did the ultrasound his intestines weren't contracting
normally which could be caused by the anesthesia he was under or the
large amound of fluid putting pressure on the intestines - he's
deficating fine!) and pancytopenia (low red cell and white cell
count). His red cell count was 2.83 x 10^6/uL when normal range should
be 6.5 - 11 x 10^6, his white cell count was 2460/uL when normal range
is 2500-8000/uL and his PCV was only 12%!! He is on several "just in
case" medications and the doctors say our next step is either a bone
marrow biopsy or exploratory surgery. I am very concerned about going
ahead with the shooting in the dark type of diagnosis.

Can anyone help? Any similar experiences??
