Subject: [ferrethealth] doing my own vaccines
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Up until now, I've been so afraid of reactions that I haven't dared to do my own vaccines,
though I did do a few at another shelter a while back. Now, though, my numbers are high
enough to make me finally willing to try it. I'm trying to remember everything I've been
told about doing this myself, but I want to check and make sure I have it right before
starting.
1. galaxy d. Arrived today in cold pack.
2. pretreat with benedryl--how much?
3. Some people have mentioned pretreating with diaxoxide. How many of you do this, and
what dose do you use? Do you do it alone or with benedryl?
4. I don't have any who have had severe reactions, but I do have a couple who have gotten
a bit spacey after being vaccinated. Should I NOT vaccinate these guys, or just do it but
pretreat and be extra observant?
5. I think I remember that the ferret dose is half the dog dose. Is that right?
6. I also remember hearing that if the ferret dose administered at 2 seperate times, half (of
the ferret dose, ie, 1/4 of the dog dose) each time and at 1-2 weeks apart, this will be just
as effective but will cut the chances of a reaction. Has anyone else heard this, and is it
right?
7. I'm thinking I should just do 2-3 ferrets at a time. That way, if there is a reaction I can
easily bring all vaccinated ferrets with me to the vet. You know, because it would be
possible for a second one to have a delayed reaction while I was at the vet with the first. So
just to be sure. Sound right?
8. Needle size?
Have I covered everything?
