On a balanced diet there is no need to give salt but a lick here or there from someone
else's is not going to do harm. In fact, table salt is given to those who are have Addisons
but whose meds are not yet well enough balanced.
I am assuming that a salt lick is regular old sodium chloride like table salt. The balanced
diets for carnivores contain the proportions needed by the specific animals (but dogs
differ from ferrets in needs for optimal health of normal, healthy individuals quite a bit
and cats also differ in needs but less so, and as a result you will notice differences in the
foods designed for each species; there are even special foods for age groups and so on).
There are other salts and some others are safe. Ex: in pinch, if there are no bananas
around for potassium and a ferret has been taking very high doses of diuretics a teensy
tiny bit of "Nu Salt" which is an entirely different salt has been used.
Are you feeding a balanced diet for ferrets? If so, no worry and no need to supplement
with salt.
