Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: can ferrets have salt
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I`m probably opening a can of worms here, but we have had some really
debilitated ones who have responded well to a (small!!) twist of sea
salt added to their soup. We have one of those grinders, containing
pure sea salt for table use.

When one is dying, you`ll try almost anything to help them. This
began, over a year ago, when we had two in very bad shape--one with
kidney trouble, and one with lymphoma. Both were dehydrating, as fast
as we could pump the fluids in. My thought was that gator aid & other
electrolyte preparations had salt---what about some NATURAL salt?
Salt makes one hold fluids--Maybe it would work! Not only did they
seem to like the taste--they responded to the treatment! Our kidney
girl rallied,& her boxes were not so wet. She held onto her fluids,
and wasn`t so dehydrated. She ate again. When the crisis was past, we
tapered off on the sea salt. She lived nine more (happy &
productive!) months. (She did require subQ fluids a couple times a
week. She seemed to know when she needed them, and would come to me,
lingering around my feet LOL) Our lymphoma boy, who was dying,
rallied also, and made it another three good months.

Since that time, we have had good results with many of our terminals,
using a very small twist of sea salt in their soup. Of course, we
use B complex injections on the debilitated ones too--and sometimes
essiac (which we brew here),so it`s hard to say which to give the
credit to.

I wouldn`t even consider a salt lick. I am not sure what those
contain, besides salt. LOL--Our ferties only get human grade stuff--
and most of it`s better than ours!

Love, Zoo
