Hi Ella:

May I stick my nose in and offer you another option? I use a product
similar to metamucil(for people) on my ferrets and get awesome
results you can see!

I take the contents of one capsule of Vetasyl (toss the capsule
itself away) and mix with 1-2 tsp Uncle Jim's Duk Soup Mix and 6-oz
very warm water (not too hot for the ferret to drink). Stir well and
let the ferret drink it. It is supposed to be the consistency of
water. It will swell as the contents of the capsule expand, then it
will move thru his digestive tract carrying all the little bits and
pieces of stuff it find along the way with it.

Because it won't get everything the first time, it's most effective
if you use this treatment ONCE A DAY FOR THREE DAYS IN A ROW. It is
also a good idea to isolate the ferret who is being 'laxed' so you
can spread poops on a paper towel and see if whatever it is you are
looking for shows up. My ferret passed several tiny bits of fur the
first two days (and I *thought* it was going to be uneventful), then
on the third day, he passed a hairball the size and shape of my
little finger!! This was six weeks after he had a $1,000 surgery for
a hairball!! Little did I know how close to another problem we were.
I just think this stuff is great. And I love that I don't have to
give the goopy, sugary lax (or vaseline that gags me to give it to
them LOL) anymore :-)

I found it most effective using it three days in a row, but this
stuff is absolutely harmless and you could use it every day if you
needed to (not sure why you would want to tho). If your ferret isn't
having big FAT poops by the third day, continue giving it until you
get big fat poops, cuz something must still be in there! I am shocked
at the size of my ferret's poop!! He hasn't pooped this big since he
was little! I sure do rest better, knowing I don't have to worry
about a blockage :-)

You absolutely can use something other than Uncle Jim's Duk Soup to
get the lax down your ferret. I use it because it flavors the water
really well, ferrets (every one its been offered to so far!) LOVE it
and drink without hesitation, and the consistency is like water while
maintaining a lot of flavor. Some folks want to use their own "duck
soup", but just remember, what you use MUST be CLEAR FLUID, water
consistency.(Otherwise you may cause the ferret more problems by
feeding him a blockage!)

I have had people ask about Metamucil...to be honest, it is the same
basically. Both products are mostly Psyllium and do exactly the same
thing once ingested. Vetasyl also has Barley. I have not asked my vet
about the safety of using Metamucil, but she was very very positive
about using the Vetasyl and the idea of fiber lax for hairball
removal in ferrets (and cats too). I haven't tried Metamucil yet -
maybe next time we do a 3-day treatment I will try a level
teaspoonful of Metamucil instead of a capsule of Vetasyl. I'm sure as
long as the metamucil to fluid ratio is right, it would work just
fine. Maybe even the artificially sweetened fruit flavored no-grit
metamucil......

Here is where you can get Vetasyl:

And Uncle Jim's Duk Soup here:

Hope that helps somebody. I really don't own stock in either company
LOL. I am just so happy with the results I've had and the results
others have reported to me. Some amazing things have come out of
ferrets!

Seems this is the only time I post - just poop posts LOL I do enjoy
reading everybody's posts tho :-)
