Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Insulinoma claimed Fozzy
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

kim, i'm so sorry to hear about fozzy's passing!!

i completely agree about diet affecting the occurance of insulinoma!!
your post certainly belongs here - no doubt about it!

i was already working on getting to a more natural diet when my lil
bear was diagnosed with insulinoma at the holidays in 2005. her
diagnosis just stepped up my efforts of switching them from the high-
grain kibble to something without grains and getting them to eat the
gravy.

even before the official diagnosis (being that it was the holidays i
had to wait a couple weeks for an appointment due to vacations and
overbooking) i switched her off the kibble with the grain in it -
ended up going cold turkey for her since she was obviously not doing
well. and i forced the gravy until she realized it was something good
and ate it on her own.

within days she improved - i was already of the thought that the diet
directly affected this condition and seeing her improve like that just
confirmed it! by the time we got in to see the doc, her sugar was just
below borderline and she was barely exhibiting any signs (walking to
the side, back leg weakness, staring off into space). she'd lost so
much weight, she wasn't a surgical candidate, so we treated with
prednisone.

that along with the dietary changes gave her a good life for years.
sadly, she couldn't deal with the loss of her cagemate this past
christmas and she passed at the beginning of the month. i know
exactly how you're feeling at the moment as i am in the same place.

rest assured, fozzy knew just how much you cared and he did have a
good life with you - short as it was.

i'm working towards raw. it's been very slow going. i'm not giving
up on it though because i know it's better for them and it's worth
whatever i have to go through to get them switched off to it!
